Complications set in two days after the procedure and she complained of severe pains in her back and painful inflammations in her body.

The mother-of-one was admitted to Evandro Freire Hospital, in Ilha do Governador on July 26 and taken to intensive care but died the following day from sepsis and kidney failure.

Doctors said they might have been able to save her life if she had sought medical attention earlier.

They revealed that undisclosed substances appeared to have been mixed in with the fat extracted from her back before it was injected into her bottom.

Given time they believe they may have been able to drain the substance which was being rejected by her body.

Wania Tavares, owner of the ‘Queen of Plastics’ (Rainha das Plásticas) clinic denied through her lawyers that this had happened.

According to detectives, Dr Wilson Ernest Galarza, the physician who carried out the surgery, is not a qualified plastic surgeon.

The hydro liposuction and gluteus graft procedure was reportedly performed on July 16.

He could be indicted for manslaughter if it’s proven he performed a surgical procedure outside of his professional training.

Research suggests his specialities are in gynaecology, cardiology and orthopaedics.

Fernanda was well known on the funk scene on Ilha do Governador where she lived.

She was discharged on the same day of the procedure which was done under local anaesthetic.

She started to feel sick shortly after and contacted the clinic to complain. However, she was assured that the pain was ‘normal’.

Janine Vieira, a friend of the singer, said Ms Rodrigues received a recorded phone message from the clinic’s receptionist.

It said: ‘The hydrolipo (sic) back procedure hurts a little bit. A little, no. It hurts a lot. This discomfort is normal in the beginning, it will be a little uncomfortable.’

The victim’s friend alleged that there was no follow-up support from the doctor.

She said to online media G1: ‘I practically begged the clinic for the number of the doctor but they didn’t want to give it to me. We believe this lack of support contributed to her death.’

In a statement, the Regional Council of Medicine in the state of Rio de Janeiro confirmed that it has opened an investigation into the case.

Regional director of the Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgery, Bruno Herkenhoff, said all patients should seek qualified plastic surgeons and that this type of procedure should only take place in a hospital or in reputable licensed cosmetic practices.

He said: ‘Interventions of this kind are considered safe and widely performed worldwide, provided that they are performed by a qualified plastic surgeon, and that all risk assessment tests are performed, including consultation with a cardiologist.’

He added that the majority of cases of serious accidents and deaths due to cosmetic procedures in Rio are associated with clandestine or home clinics carried out by people who are not professionals.
