Justin Hartley didn’t appear in Selling Sunset due to contract with NBC says series creator

Justin Hartley’s divorce from Chrishell Stause was featured on season three of Selling Sunset.

But the actor himself didn’t make an appearance as he was contractually obligated to NBC, according to series creator Adam DiVello.

‘We certainly asked many, many times. I think it was just his contract with NBC,’ DiVello said in an interview with Variety out Thursday.

Chrishell tearfully recounted their split last November, in the latest season of Selling Sunset that hit Netflix earlier this month.

Hartley was also reportedly not happy with how his 39-year-old ex is portraying their split.

He was said to be ‘irritated that she’s airing their private information publicly and knows there is more to the story than is being told,’ a source told Us Weekly.

Though the actor, 43, ‘has not watched the episodes’ he has been told what his ex-wife said about their breakup.

‘He’s irritated that she’s airing their private information publicly and knows there is more to the story than is being told,’ the source said. ‘His close friends and family know what really happened, as does Chrishell, so ultimately it’s her choice of what is put out there.’

In the new season, the Selling Sunset star broke down in tears as she recalled exactly how Hartley informed her of the filing late last year.

Though the source insisted that ‘The claims made in the show that something changed in Justin after his This is Us fame are completely false.’

In the emotionally-charged clip, Stause reveals to her costar Mary Fitzgerald that the This Is Us actor sent the bad news on text message, explaining: ‘He text me that we were filed,’ she said, adding: ‘Forty-five minutes later, the world knew.’

Fitzgerald looks shocked at the news, as she asks her in disbelief: ‘He texted you?!’

Stause went on: ‘I talked to him right after because I thought that must be a joke. But that was kind of the end of the communication.’

‘When I found out, I was minutes before leaving the house for work so I immediately just grabbed a few things and I just got out of there as fast as I could,” the former soap star said.

‘I don’t think I really knew where I was going or what I was going to do, but I just had to leave.’

‘I’m just kind of in shock with it all,’ the former daytime TV star added through tears.

Adding: ‘Chrishell knows that’s not what happened, so for her to let people believe that is upsetting to him.’

News of Stause and Hartley’s divorce emerged last November, with the 43-year-old actor citing irreconcilable differences in his legal filings.

At the time sources say the split came as a complete surprise to Chrishell.

There is some dispute over the timeline of the breakup.

In divorce filings This Is Us star Justin listed the date of separation as July 8.’ She claims November 22, the day he filed, was the actual date of separation, however.

Making things murkier, the pair made several public appearances together following Justin’s claimed date of separation, seen together at the Emmy Awards in September 2019, the Veuve Clicquot Polo game in October 2019, and a Hollywood Reporter-hosted pre-Golden Globes bash in November of that year.
