Apple TV Plus announces new musical comedy series with Saturday Night Live’s Cecily Strong

Apple TV Plus is developing a new untitled musical comedy series, with a star-studded cast already attached.

Saturday Night Live star Cecily Strong will lead a huge cast for the musical, which also includes Keegan Michael Key, Alan Cumming, Fred Armisen and Kristen Chenoweth, according to Deadline

The cast also includes Fred Armisen, Aaron Tveit, Dove Cameron, Ariana DeBose, Jamie Camil, Jane Krakowski and Ann Harada.

The musical is written by Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio (Despicable Me), which follows a couple (Strong and Key) who go on a backpacking trip that they hope will revitalize their relationship.

They come across a magical town entitled Schmigadoon, where, ‘everyone acts like they’re in a studio musical from the 1940s.’

The couple realizes that they can’t leave this bizarre town until they can both find ‘true love.’

Cumming portrays Mayor Menlove, described as, ‘the welcoming mayor of the town with a secret (and a song) in his heart.’ 

Armisen’s character is Reverend Layton, the mild-mannered religious leader of the town, while Chenoweth plays Mildred Layton, Reverend Layton’s morally superior wife who is in everybody’s business.  

Tveit plays Danny Bailey, said to be ‘the town bad boy’ who has his eye on Melissa, with Cameron playing Betsy, the farmers daughter who instantly falls for Josh.

Harada rounds out the cast as Florence Menlove, the oblivious and dutiful wife of Mayor Menlove.

Paul will serve ass the showrunner while also writing all of the original music, with Barry Sonnenfeld set to direct.

Saturday Night Live creator Lorne Michaels’ company Broadway Video will executive produce the musical series, with Universal Television producing. 

Strong will also serve as an executive producer, alongside Andrew Singer, with Caroline Maroney, Micah Frank and Rose Lam producing.
