The Bachelorette‘s post-production team deserves a Logie Award for editing after Thursday night’s episode pulled off the seemingly impossible.

Thanks to the magic of TV, many viewers were fooled into thinking host Osher Günsberg was present at the rose ceremony – when he actually wasn’t.

Most people watching at home would not have noticed that Osher was never actually shown in the same shot as the contestants or Bachelorettes Elly and Becky Miles at any time.

This is a tell-tale sign that he actually filmed his segments later, and they were added in during post-production.

The effect was quite seamless, with reaction shots being used to make it look like Osher and the boys were in the same room.

In one particularly clever moment, a contestant was shown glancing over towards the door right before Osher made his entrance.

This created the impression that he’d heard Osher coming.

As he addressed the room, his speech was interspersed with shots of the bachelors reacting to what he was saying – creating the illusion of a real exchange.

Later, Osher was shown turning around and preparing to leave the room via an unseen back exit, before sisters Becky and Elly entered via the courtyard.

This meant it wasn’t jarring when he and the sisters weren’t shown in the same shot, as the presenter usually greets the suitor upon their arrival.

All of these tricks were used alongside orchestral music which helped to create a smooth and continuous feel.

However, Osher was around for the first rose ceremony, which aired during Wednesday’s season premiere. At several points, he was featured in the same shot as the bachelors, so no clever editing was required.

The Bachelorette was filmed in Sydney from late July to early September.

Osher, 46, missed a fair chunk of the production because he was stuck in Melbourne filming The Masked Singer, which dragged on for weeks longer than scheduled due to a COVID-19 outbreak on set in August.

He addressed his absence on Hit Hobart’s Jimmy & Nath show on Wednesday.

‘I was trying to get to work and then there was a global pandemic that locked me in my apartment for a couple of weeks,’ he said.

‘There are a few moments I didn’t manage to get there but don’t worry you’ll still see me.’
