A lorry has crashed over the central reservation of a dual carriageway, sending hundreds of Amazon parcels flying and causing chaos for commuting motorists.

The A27 will be closed ‘for most of the day’ after police rushed to reports of a lorry flipping over onto three lanesĀ at around 5.40am today.

The HGV’s delivery driver, 62, has been taken to hospital with serious injuries, and another motorist, a 50-year-old woman, suffered minor injuries in the crash.

Sussex Police have since said the driver’s injuries ‘are not thought to be life-threatening or life-changing.’

The huge vehicle is still lying sideways across the road, with hundreds of brown packages having ripped open its see-through roof and been scattered across the major highway.

There are currently five fire crews at the site of the crash, and West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service has issued a warning to drivers urging them to ‘avoid the area’.

A spokesman for the service said: ‘The crash involved one HGV and one car. Crews have released one person from the HGV using small tools.

‘The driver of the other vehicle self-released prior to the fire and rescue service’s attendance. Crews are now working to contain a diesel leak using environmental packs. The A27 is expected to remain closed for some time.’

A large section of the A27 between the Fishbourne area of Chichester and the Emsworth roundabout in Havant, near Portsmouth, has been closed off to traffic while emergency services deal with the toppled vehicle.

Traffic reports from the area describe ‘very slow traffic’ on the A27 and surrounding roads.

Officers say the recovery of the large lorry will ‘take some time’.

A force spokesman said: ‘The road is closed and will be for a number of hours – possibly most of the day. Please plan ahead.’

Sergeant Richard Hobbs of Sussex Roads Police, who is attending the scene, added: ‘The road will be closed both eastbound and westbound for some time due to the protracted recovery of the overturned HGV.’
