Beauty: Why I always pick roses
Uplifting and gorgeous smelling, they’re my go-to ingredient this autumn – for fragrance and skincare
I would never call rose a trend. In the gardening world its bloom may be seasonal but in beauty it’s perennial and deployed regularly. I would say, though, that lately there have been some interesting launches based around the flower and since it’s usually a winner, I felt it worth bringing this selection to your attention.
Firstly, Aromatherapy Associates has a new Rose Reimagined range – blended with geranium and palmarosa (think lemony undertones) – which includes Rose Pink Clay Mask (£40) and Rose Hand Cream (£20). My favourite is its simple classic Rose Bath & Shower Oil (£49). Rose has been used in aromatherapy for centuries as an antidepressant so this collection is all about lifting the mood – and who doesn’t want to tick that box at the moment? Also on the fragrance front is Diptyque’s new limited-edition Othoniel Rosa, a peppery and woody take that’s modern and warm. The bottle comes decorated with artwork by the perfume’s creative collaborator Jean-Michel Othoniel (£120, diptyqueparis.com).
Meanwhile Frédéric Malle has created a Body Wash of his fragrance (with geranium, cassis and pepper) which is both sumptuous and a more affordable route to the fragrance (£45, fredericmalle.co.uk).
On the skincare front, Chantecaille has just released its annual limited Rose de Mai collection made from the very precious May rose grown in the South of France. It includes Face Oil (£160), Pure Rosewater (£65) and glossy lipstick Lip Chic (£52). This year all the packaging comes with rose-petal designs by John Derian, and there’s also a kit which includes one of his sought-after glass trays featuring the design alongside the rose oil and water (£312, chantecaille.co.uk).
Alternatively, Typology has a lovely Rose Hydrolate (rosewater) made from organic Damascus rose (£8.80, uk.typology.com).
