Arm founder warns sale to Nvidia will create ‘another US technology monopoly’

Arm’s co-founder has warned its sale to Nvidia will create ‘another US technology monopoly’.

Hermann Hauser said the British chip maker’s designs were ubiquitous in digital devices around the world.

But the 71-year-old warned the takeover would mean Arm was no longer ‘the Switzerland of the semiconductor industry’ and its intellectual property could transform Nvidia into a dominant force akin to Google, Facebook and Amazon.

Arm c-founder Hermann Hauser said the British chip maker’s designs were ubiquitous in digital devices around the world

In a letter to Parliament’s foreign affairs committee, Hauser said: ‘There is not a single important semiconductor company in the world which does not have an Arm licence.

‘Nvidia has an opportunity to become the quasi-monopoly supplier of microprocessors to the world.

‘This will give Nvidia a dominant position in all processor segments and create another US technology monopoly.’

Nvidia has repeatedly insisted it will maintain Arm’s neutral posture towards its rivals. But there are calls for a competition inquiry into the deal.
