Apple held its annual iPhone event Tuesday during a livestream, due to the coronavirus still lingering in the US.

The firm unwrapped the highly anticipated iPhone 12, along with three other smartphones – the iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 12 Pro Max and the all-new iPhone mini.

However, the biggest surprise of the day was Apple announcing this year’s devices will not include the traditional charger and EarPods – but it pushed the MagSafe and Beats Flex devices.

MagSafe is being used in the iPhone 12 range for chargers, phone cases and other accessories and allows for rapid 15W wireless charging.

Meanwhile the latest Beats Flex headphones, released to coincide with the iPhone 12 launch event, are billed as the Apple-owned company’s ‘most affordable premium wireless earphones to date’.

Lisa Jackson, Apple’s VP of environment, policy and social initiatives, said during the event: ‘Customers already have over 700 million Lightning headphones, and many customers have moved to a wireless experience.’

‘There are also over 2 billion Apple power adapters out there in the world, and that’s not counting the billions of third-party adapters.’

‘We’re removing these items from the iPhone box, which reduces carbon emissions and avoids the mining and use of precious materials.’

The tech giant, which was the first company to be valued at more than $2 trillion, says the decision to remove the two for the iPhone 12 will cut over 2 million metric tons of carbon emissions a year. By Apple's estimates, this works out as the same as almost 450,000 cars being taken off the road annually

The tech giant, which was the first company to be valued at more than $2 trillion, says the decision will cut over 2 million metric tons of carbon emissions a year.

By Apple’s estimates, this works out as the same as almost 450,000 cars being taken off the road annually.

Jeremiah Harding shared: ‘Apple is now selling the iPhone… without a charger. Pretty soon, they’ll take your screen, and you’ll have you attach one with a dongle. Anyone on the hype train for any new iPhone is a shill. “Oh it’s 5G capable now!” So are tons of better, cheaper brands. With a charger.’

Most of the gripes shared include a little dose of humor, as one user predicts Apple CEO Tim Cook will reveal that the iPhone 13 will be ‘DIY.’

‘With the iPhone 13, we’re doing something revolutionary. For the first time, we will let you DIY your own phones. You may be answering why, and it’s because I’m a capitalist scum that wants to reduce costs as much as possible because you will buy it anyways,’ reads the post.

Reports about Apple eliminating the charger and EarPods has been circulating the web for most of the year, all of which had suggested that would create a cheaper iPhone 12 – some even rumored a price of $649.

However, some users mentioned that the iPhone 11, which includes the charger and EarPods, costs $599, while the latest model is $200 more and is with the added devices.

According to a post in a thread on MacRumors, a user said they spoke with an Apple employee while getting their smartphone fixed at a retail location.

‘The associate that called ended up having a long, completely random talk with me about technology in general,’ reads the post.

‘Somehow, the cost of a lightning cable came up, after asking if I could get my leather case replaced. Turns out, it’s $0.19 to manufacture a Lightning cable, although he wasn’t sure if that included the box, etc.’

Apple’s tiny USB Power Adapter was $29.99 on its website, but after the firm pulled it from the iPhone boxes, it dropped the device down to $19.00.

Ben Wood, Chief of Research at CCS Insight, adds: ‘It’s easy to be skeptical about Apple removing the charger and headphones from the box, and there are undoubtedly cost-savings, but the environmental benefits can’t be ignored.

‘Other phone-makers have embraced this approach, but Apple’s decision is likely to mean that in many cases the days of a charger and headphones being included with a new smartphone are over.’
