Katie Melua says she regrets naive love songs of her early years

Katie Melua says she regrets naive love songs of her early years as she’s realised it’s not meant to ‘last forever’ following divorce from former motorcycle racer James Toseland

The Georgian-born British singer, 36, announced her separation from motorcycle star James Toseland in August after eight years of marriage

She made her name with jazz-infused love songs. But newly divorced Katie Melua has said she now regrets her unrealistic portrayals of eternal romantic love.

The Georgian-born British singer, 36, announced her separation from motorcycle star James Toseland in August after eight years of marriage.

‘I’ve been guilty of singing about romantic love as though it’s all meant to last for ever,’ she said in a newspaper interview. ‘But it’s not. And it’s OK that it’s not.’

Miss Melua, who rose to fame with her chart-topping debut album Call Off The Search in 2003, said she has stopped being ‘afraid to depict life truthfully’.

She added that her post-divorce Album No 8 is about ‘readjusting’ attitudes towards love.

‘I had a beautiful marriage so these songs about readjusting our attitudes to love aren’t angry or bitter,’ she told The Independent

‘The hope is that if we take the pressure off, we can learn to be more accepting of ourselves and each other.’

Her earliest songs were mostly written by songwriter and Wombles star Mike Batt.

But Miss Melua is now writing her own music, which she said finally ‘represents the woman I am’.

She added: ‘Now I’m older I’ve stopped being afraid to depict life truthfully. But I will always acknowledge the greatness of the human spirit in its capability to handle that reality.’
