Sunrise: The Cash Cow is unmasked on live TV in embarrassing gaffe

‘Sorry, kids!’ The man behind Sunrise’s Cash Cow costume is exposed on live TV as the mascot’s head falls off – leaving the young staffer VERY embarrassed

The hosts of Channel Seven’s Sunrise were left in stitches on Thursday after the Cash Cow’s head fell off during a hilarious live TV gaffe.

The mascot pops up during Sunrise’s money giveaways, but the identity of the person behind the novelty outfit is a closely guarded industry secret.

But all that changed when the Cash Cow’s energetic dance routine caused the head of the costume to topple off, revealing the young male staffer underneath.

‘How would you like to win some cash?’ asked Samantha Armytage at 7:42am as the show cut to the Cash Cow dancing outside Brekky Central in Sydney’s Martin Place.

‘The Cash Cow has $20,000 to give away for our lucky winner,’ she added.

The mascot pretended to be a ski jumper using two umbrellas as poles, and as he threw his head back to simulate a leap off the ramp, his head flew into the air.

The man wearing the costume immediately dropped the umbrellas and covered his face with his hands, then rushed off camera.

Back in the studio, Samantha and her colleagues burst into fits of laughter as co-host David Koch yelled out: ‘Sorry, kiddies! Oh, no.’

‘Something terrible’s happened,’ said sports reporter Mark Beretta.

‘You’re terrible, Muriel. That’s funny,’ added newsreader Natalie Barr in between fits of giggles.

Samantha, 44, reassured viewers that the Cash Cow was ‘alright’ and ‘okay’ as the mascot fell to its knees outside and begged for forgiveness.

The clumsy cow then rolled around on the pavement in distress.

It’s not the first time Sunrise has suffered a live TV gaffe, as weatherman Sam Mac was accused by his colleagues on air earlier this month of being ‘hungover’.

On October 5, Samantha asked Sam, 38, if he was ‘alright’ while broadcasting live from Adelaide Zoo, adding: ‘We’re a bit worried about you this morning.’

David, 64, agreed with his colleague and said that Sam looked a bit ‘dusty’.

‘No! I was in bed by eight o’clock,’ replied Sam. ‘You can check the CCTV footage from the hotel. I had a very quiet night.’

But the hosts wouldn’t let it go, and Samantha went on to say: ‘You jut seemed a little bit vague and distracted.’

‘That’s how I always am! You’ve seen the show,’ argued Sam, who seemed genuinely surprised by the suggestion.

Sam later clarified on Instagram that he wasn’t hungover at the time.
