Labour MP Yasmin Qureshi said she has been admitted to hospital with pneumonia after testing positive for Covid-19

Labour MP Yasmin Qureshi has thanked ‘excellent’ NHS medics after she was discharged from hospital following a diagnosis of Covid-19 and pneumonia.

The MP for Bolton South East spent 10 days feeling unwell and decided to self-isolate at home, before her condition worsened and she was taken to hospital on Saturday.

Just under a week later, the shadow international development minister has been discharged from Royal Bolton Hospital.

The 57-year-old wrote on Twitter today: ‘A quick message to say that, thanks to the excellent care I received at (Bolton NHS) over the last week, I have now been discharged from hospital.

‘I am so grateful to the wonderful staff who looked after me and proud of the NHS.

‘I am grateful for to my staff for keeping the office running in my absence and to the House of Commons Speaker (Sir Lindsay Hoyle) for allowing me to still be able to vote this week.

‘I am completely overwhelmed by the kind messages I have received from everyone, they meant so much.’

Ms Qureshi was one of the Greater Manchester MPs arguing against Tier 3 coronavirus restrictions being imposed on the region.

Just over a month ago she warned some people were not taking the pandemic seriously enough and believed it was a hoax.

She told The Manc: ‘They genuinely believe it’s some kind of conspiracy.

‘A lot of them don’t understand the rules either and so there are many who just aren’t following them – they think it is a way of controlling them somehow.

‘It is very dangerous. There is a lot of confusion about the virus in the area.

‘There are a lot of people now who do not believe it is true.’

The MP since 2010 told followers and constituents about her admittance to hospital on Saturday, writing: ‘Two weeks ago, I began to feel unwell. I then tested positive for COVID-19, so my family and I immediately self-isolated at home. I have not travelled to Westminster or anywhere else.

‘I continued to work as best I could remotely, attending virtual meetings and doing casework, but after 10 days, I began to feel much worse and on Saturday I was admitted to the Royal Bolton Hospital with pneumonia.

‘I’m being very well looked after and have nothing but praise and admiration for the wonderful staff at the hospital. They have been amazing throughout the process and I would like to extend my thanks to everyone working here in such difficult circumstances.’

The MP’s staff continued to work during her absence and constituents could still contact her office.
