Jennifer Lawrence clarifies her voting record after admitting she used to be ‘a little Republican’

She ruffled a few feathers when during a podcast appearance she admitted she used to be ‘a little Republican’ while growing up.

And Jennifer Lawrence has hastened to clarify her political affiliations now that she’s older, in a tweet on Tuesday.

‘I would like to clarify my political affiliation, which is the subject of many circulating headline,’ began the 30-year-old Oscar winning actress’ tweet.

Clarification: Jennifer Lawrence, 30, has hastened to clarify her political affiliations now that she’s older, in a tweet on Tuesday

‘I grew up in a republican family and voted for [Republican candidate] John McCain in 2008, but through Obama’s presidency, and growing up to realize I was voting against my own rights, I am proud to say I am a Democrat,’ concluded the Winter’s Bone star.

The three-time Golden Globe winner has recently used her platform to endorse Joe Biden and Kamala Harris for the upcoming presidential election.

She revealed last week on the podcast Absolutely Not that she used to be ‘a little Republican,’ as she condemned President Donald Trump‘s support of white supremacy.

The 30-year-old said: ‘I grew up Republican. My first time voting, I voted for John McCain. I was a little Republican.’

She said that growing up in a Republican household allowed her to ‘see the fiscal benefits of some of the Republican policies.’

But Lawrence added that ‘the social issues weren’t in line with [her] views’ and over the years, she ‘changed [her] politics based on the things [she] learned.’

She previously mused on her political journey to Vogue back in 2015: ‘I was raised a Republican, but I just can’t imagine supporting a party that doesn’t support women’s basic rights.

‘It’s 2015 and gay people can get married and we think that we’ve come so far, so, yay! But have we? I don’t want to stay quiet about that stuff.’

The Hunger Games star added: ‘My view on the election is pretty cut-and-dried: If Donald Trump is president of the United States, it will be the end of the world.’

She cited Trump being elected to the presidency as what ‘changed everything’ for her from a political standpoint, during her chat with Absolutely Not.

Lawrence said: ‘This is an impeached president who’s broken many laws and has refused to condemn white supremacy, and it feels like there has been a line drawn in the sand. I don’t think it’s right… it just changes things for me.’

She continued, referring to Trump’s ‘stand back and standby’ comment to the Proud Boys at last month’s first presidential debate: ‘I don’t want to support a president who supports white supremacists.’

Good old days: The Silver Linings Playbook actress also longed for the days of President Barack Obama's presidency, when she could 'go days, maybe weeks, without thinking about the president because everything would generally be okay' (pictured in October, 2020)

She endorsed Vice President Joe Biden and his running mate Kamala Harris earlier this month, when she appeared on a cover of V Magazine‘s special election issue.

Lawrence said: ‘Voting is the foundation of our democracy and our freedom. And I would consider this upcoming election the most consequential of our lifetime.

‘I’m voting for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris this year because Donald Trump has and will continue to put himself before the safety and well-being of America. He does not represent my values as an American, and most importantly as a human being.’
