Ellen Page and Paris Berelc set to star in video game comedy film 1Up

Ellen Page and Paris Berelc have signed-on to star in 1UP, an underdog comedy film set in the world of gaming.

Berelc will play a college female gamer with something to prove, while Page has the role of her coach. 

Fansboys and Barely Lethal director Kyle Newman will helm what will be the first feature to come from BuzzFeed Studios.

Berelc, 21, will portray a gamer who quits her college eSports team due to sexism from her male counterparts. 

With her scholarship on the line, she’s forced to assemble a Varsity caliber, all-women’s team that can compete with the boys. 

Along the way she recruits an unlikely crew of unskilled misfits and an enigmatic coach — played by Page — who has a gaming scandal in her past.

The story has been described as being in the vein of Pitch Perfect but set in the world of eSports with a GamerGate backdrop.

Julia Yorks wrote the script while BuzzFeed’s Richard Alan Reid is producing alongside Michael Philip and Jason Moring. 

Production is expected to begin in Toronto in the November, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

She has also garnered recognition for her roles in the Netflix original series Alexa & Katie (2018-2020) and  Disney XD’s Lab Rats: Elite Force.  

During her career in Hollywood, Page, 33, has received praise for her roles in such films as Hard Candy (2005), Juno (2007), The Tracey Fragments (2007), Whip It (2009, Super (2010), Inception (2010) and Tallulah (2016).
