Shayna Jack cries while talking about her drug ban from swimming on SAS Australia before quitting

Shayna Jack broke down in tears during an emotional interrogation on Monday’s episode of SAS Australia, before quitting the show.

The 21-year-old swimmer maintained her innocence as she was asked about her four-year ban from the sport, after testing positive for the drug Ligandrol in June last year.

‘I’ve swum my whole life and never done anything different, and a-year-and-a-half ago, I got accused of taking drugs, which I never do. Ever,’ she said, her voice shaking.

Shayna explained that she was heading into a training camp ahead of the world championships in South Korea, when she undertook ‘a regular drug test’.

‘It was normal for me to get drug tested, so I didn’t think anything of it, and they called up the head coach and that was it,’ she recounted.

‘I got sent home and they gave me four years, ban from swimming, which will be the end of my career, and so I decided to fight that…’

Chief instructor Ant Middleton observed that Shayna doesn’t ‘seem the type to dope or cheat’.

‘I’m just… like, my whole life, I’ve been an honest athlete. Like, the purpose of my swimming was that I could impact somebody else’s life and be a role model to them, because that’s how I fell in love with the sport,’ she continued.

After a beat, Ant told her: ‘You know what, you don’t actually need to tell me that, because I believe every single word you’re saying. And I’m not just saying that.’

He then asked her how she’d feel if she was never allowed to swim again, as DS Billy Billingham sat silently alongside him.

Shayna then broke down in tears and admitted: ‘That’s probably the hardest question anyone could ever ask me, because I’ve never thought about anything else but swimming.’

As Shayna continued to cry, Billy struggled to contain his own emotions, shifting uncomfortably in his seat.

She later added: ‘The one thing that hurts me more than anything to my core is that, yes, I’ve had a dream to represent my country at the Olympics since I was 10.

‘But it’s more the fact that I’ve always done the right thing by my sport and by my country. I’ve never felt so much pain and anger that I feel for the fact that I don’t have control of what’s happening.

‘I don’t know what I did to deserve this, and that’s a question I’ve asked myself for nine months, is, “What have I done to deserve this?”‘

Shayna revealed her ordeal had often caused her to forget how strong she is, as she spoke about missing the sport.

After she was escorted out of the room, a clearly moved Billy turned to Ant and quietly confessed: ‘She reminds me of my daughter.’

‘Every day for the past year has been a living nightmare. But I am someone who will speak up when it’s not right, and that’s exactly what I plan on doing,’ she added.
