The number of CCTV cameras in the UK has soared to more than 5.2 million, new figures have shown.

An almost ten per cent annual rise in the number of cameras means there is now one for every 13 people in the country. 

London has the most, with 689,000 public and private cameras, including those on digital doorbells, for its nine million residents.

Second is Birmingham with 83,000, followed by Leeds (58,000), Glasgow (46,000), Sheffield (43,000), Manchester (39,000) and Edinburgh (38,000).

Installation company cctv.co.uk, says 96 per cent of cameras in the UK are owned by homeowners and private businesses.

Spokesman James Ritchey said the rise was ‘driven mainly by residents installing home CCTV and doorbell cams… their popularity is relentless as the cost of technology comes down.’
