Tick, Tick… Boom follows a struggling playwright named Jon (Garfield) who endures a midlife crisis as he approaches 30 and feels he’s no closer to living his dream.

The play originated as an autobiographical one-man show by playwright Jonathan Larson, based on his own struggles, which he debuted in 1990.

Larson would come to be known for his groundbreaking musical Rent, though the playwright suddenly died at 36 on the morning of Rent’s first preview performance.

After Larson’s death, and the massive success of Rent, Pulitzer-winning playwright David Auburn (Proof) was brought in to re-configure the one-man show into a three-character musical.

The revamped Tick, Tick… Boom debuted Off Broadway in 2001, starring Raul Esparza as Jon, Jerry Dixon as Michael and Amy Spanger as Susan.

Lin-Manuel Miranda, who played Jon in the Encores! Off-Center revival in 2014, is directing the film adaptation, with de Jesus playing Michael and Alexandra Shipp playing Susan.
