A bomb squad has used a robot to investigate a suspicious package after police arrested a man ‘with explosives and a shotgun’.

Troops set up the machine as officers swooped on the house and detained the 58-year-old in Blackpool.

Lancashire Constabulary seized a shotgun, believed to be an imitation, and found the suspicious package.

Officers later arrested the man, who has not been named, on suspicion of firearms offences.

Blackpool Police said: ‘Around 2.50pm today we attended an address in Bolton Street, Blackpool.

‘A shotgun, believed to be an imitation, was seized and during a search a suspicious package was also found.

‘The property has been evacuated and a cordon is in place. Please avoid the area at this time.’

It later added: ‘A 58-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of firearms offences in connection with an ongoing incident on Bolton Street, Blackpool.

‘The property has been evacuated and a cordon remains in place while we make the area safe.’
