Joanna Page believes there will be another Gavin & Stacey special but not another series

Joanna Page has revealed she believes there will be ‘one more special’ of Gavin & Stacey, but not another series.

The actress, 43, who plays Stacey on the hit show, reckons creators Ruth Jones and James Corden wouldn’t be able to get the cast together for long enough to do another series.

Speaking to The Sun’s Fabulous magazine, she said: ‘As a fan, surely they’ve got to do another one. I don’t think we’d ever do another series because I don’t think we could get everyone together for long enough, but I can’t imagine they could leave it the way they did. One more special, then done.’

The BBC had fans rejoicing when its Christmas line-up was announced and confirmed that Gavin & Stacey would return ‘one day’ following the 2019 Christmas special.

Ruth and James, who play Nessa and Smithy, have not given any indication when the next special could air as of yet.

Asked whether she worried how the 2019 episode would be received, Joanna said: ‘I didn’t ever feel the pressure of whether people would enjoy it or not, it was all about the experience of being with all of these people again.

‘I hadn’t seen Mat Horne in years and I phoned him and said: “Do you fancy meeting up for a drink before we go to this read-through?” and honest to God it was like we’d just seen each other the day before.’

The actress added that as soon as the cast met up for their first read-through, it felt like the first series all over again.

Last year’s Christmas special, which ended on a cliffhanger of Nessa proposing to Smithy, was watched by more than 17million people.

Joanna reigniting fans hopes comes after Ruth admitted during an appearance on This Morning on Friday that the show ‘may never return to Barry’.

The Welsh actress and writer, 53, admitted she has no plans to start writing a new script for the programme, especially as her co-writer James Cordon lives in the U.S.

She said: 'I don’t think we’d ever do another series because I don’t think we could get everyone together for long enough, but I can’t imagine they could leave it the way they did. One more special, then done'

The final scene in the episode ended on a huge cliffhanger as Nessa got down on one knee and proposed to unlikely love interest Smithy, who she shares son Neil with following a night of passion in series one.

Speaking to hosts Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford about likelihood of giving fans an answer to the question, Ruth said: ‘There aren’t any plans to write anything.

‘Obviously James is in America and I’m in Wales. The joy of our last special is that if we never go back to Barry, we’ll always wonder what happened next.’

She added: ‘I quite like leaving it hanging. I’m sorry I don’t have any better news.’

It comes in contrast to what was reported earlier this week, when BBC bosses confirmed that the much-loved show will be revived again in the future.

While outlining the upcoming Christmas television schedule, the channel’s Chief Content Officer, Charlotte Moore, discussed the future of the BBC1 sitcom.

She explained: ‘That wasn’t something that was going to happen this year,’ and followed that up with: ‘One day.’

Earlier this month main characters, Joanna and Mathew were spotted celebrating the end of the Welsh lockdown on a night out together in Cardiff.

And fans are beside themselves at the prospect of another Gavin and Stacey reunion – hopeful that the actors were meeting to discuss it.

Fan Kirstie Smith spotted them while out with her boyfriend, and managed to get a snap of the pair.

Unable to pose with them due to COVID-19 rules and social distancing, the actors happily smiled at her through a perspex screen for the photo.

She later told Wales Online: ‘I was so chuffed to see them but obviously gutted due to what’s going on I couldn’t actually go up to them properly but at least I managed to get a quick picture.’

Someone else who saw the duo on the same night tweeted: ‘Don’t want anyone to lose their s**t but I’ve just seen Gavin and Stacey in Cardiff walking past me. Filming?’
