Attitude Awards 2020: Dua Lipa, Paloma Faith, Taylor Swift, and Stephen Fry scoop gongs

The likes of Dua Lipa, Taylor Swift, Luke Evans, and Stephen Fry scooped gongs at the 2020 Attitude Awards on Tuesday night.

Joining the string of ceremonies that have had to skip a glitzy bash this year and go virtual, thanks to COVID-19, the awards were hosted by comedian Tom Allen, and filmed over six days at the Camden Roundhouse – the first activity there in months.

Several guests linked in from Australia and the USA, with 14 award winners as well as representatives of the NHS LGBTQ community and the entire cast and director of Ryan Murphy’s Boys in the Band movie.

Dua grew emotional as she accepted her music award, and discussed how young LGBTQ+ youth have struggled with their mental health during the coronavirus crisis.

Detailing how there has been an increase in young people who have tragically taken their lives in 2020, she urged those watching: ‘If there is someone you think is vulnerable, please don’t wait for them to reach out.’

Dua became emotional and had to take a moment to compose herself, apologising before she went on: ‘Lets wrap our arms around the young people in this community.

‘Now I don’t know about you but when we’re allowed to I can’t wait to get out there on the dance floor with you all.’

After virtually accepting her speech from Todrick Hall, Taylor said she wanted to continue to advocate for the rights of the LGBTQ+ community.

As she held her award, she said: ‘I’m really grateful for this, this is so amazing, I want to thank anyone who had a hand in deciding that I should deserve this.

‘Mostly I want to say thank you to the fans for giving me a platform to make music and to be vocal about things that are right and wrong.

‘I just believe very firmly that everyone should be able to live out their love story, without fear of discrimination, and the way for that to happen is for us to do that is to keep pushing governments to put protections in place for the LGBTQIA community.’

Taylor went on to share her support for the LGBTQ+ community, as she closed off her speech with the statement: ‘I promise to always advocate for that.’

In Luke’s speech while he was accepting the Man Of The Year award, he said he hoped he has helped others in the past.

He said: ‘Over the years it may have seemed I wasn’t the open proud gay man that I was expected to be, but I was doing it my way.

‘I was cutting my own path, and in doing so I hope I provided a way for those who have not been able to come out or are from countries where it is illegal to see they’re not alone.

‘I hope that my journey can provide them with some hope, they can see there are millions of people who are just like them and they are not alone.’

Paloma shared an amusing anecdote during her acceptance speech, as she said: ‘I’m so honoured to win this award as an Honourary gay and I feel like its wonderful to be acknowledge who and what I am after years of an identity crisis.

‘I was told to talk about fisting because when Amanda Holden did that she saw her popularity soar, unfortunately I am carrying the next messiah right now, so I didn’t think it was appropriate to talk about fisting until after it is born.’

Presenters included Mark Ronson, RuPaul, Simon Callow CBE, MNEK, Todrick Hall, Layton Williams, Max Harwood, Dr Ranj Singh and Vogue’s Editor-in-Chief Edward Enninful OBE.

The Virgin Atlantic Attitude Awards, powered by Jaguar, are to benefit the Attitude Magazine Foundation for LGBTQ causes, which has raised and distributed more than £250,000 since summer 2018.

Films were also screened featuring Celebrity Masterchef winner Riyadh Khalaf and TV’s Judge Rob Rinder, who visited the Food Chain and Curly’s Legacy respectively, both previous beneficiaries of the Foundation’s support.

Darren Styles OBE, Publisher of Attitude magazine, said: ‘This has been the most extraordinary running of the Attitude Awards, where the more usual 650 guests in black tie at the Roundhouse have been replaced with a world audience in the digital, virtual space.
