Amanda Seyfried turned down Gamora role in Guardians of the Galaxy as she thought movie would ‘bomb’

Amanda Seyfried turned down the role of Gamora in Guardians Of The Galaxy because she thought the movie would ‘bomb’… as it grossed over $772M

Amanda Seyfried had the chance to play Gamora in Guardians Of The Galaxy but turned the role down.

On Friday the 35-year-old Mamma Mia! actress said she ‘didn’t want to be part of the first Marvel movie that bombed,’ as she spoke on the The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast

Acknowledging that in retrospect her thoughts on the film’s ultimate success were ‘very wrong,’ – as it went on to gross nearly $773M at the box office – she cited self-preservation as the root of her decision.

‘I said, “Who wants to see a movie about a talking tree and a raccoon?” Which is clearly – I was very wrong,’ she told host Scott Feinberg.

‘The script was great, it was all based in not wanting to be “that guy,”‘ she said.

She continued, ‘If you are the star of a giant movie like that, and it bombs, Hollywood does not forgive you. I’ve seen that happen to people and it was a giant, giant fear and I thought, is it worth it?’

The wildly successful James Gunn directed film eventually gave the role to Zoe Saldana who has received overwhelming praise for her portrayal as the galaxy combatant.

She continued to portray Gamora in the film’s 2017 sequel, as well as Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame alongside a star-studded cast including Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans and the late Chadwick Boseman.

Seyfried on the other hand went on to star in 2014’s A Million Ways to Die In the West, which only grossed $86.4M worldwide and snagged a role in Noah Baumbach’s While We’re Young which grossed $21.1M.

The Guardians Of The Galaxy universe is now gearing up for it’s Vol. 3 as Gunn shared in a November 9th tweet, ‘Script is written and most of the production heads have been hired.’

The third installation of the film has been years in the making, as Gunn said in September 2019 that the script took him over a year to write, adding in May 2020 that it was ‘long past the first draft stage.’
