Coronation Street‘s Abi Franklin and Roy Cropper are set to come together in a heartbreaking new storyline.

The unlikely duo, played by Sally Carmen and David Neilson, will take centre stage in the ITV soap next year as part of a devastating ‘social realism’ plot.

Coronation Street boss Iain MacLeod teased that Roy and Abi would be ‘thrown together’ as part of the ‘heart-breaking and serious’ storyline that’s set to unfold in 2021.

He told The Sun: ‘There’s a really big social realism story that’s going to draw in Roy Cropper and Abi Franklin.

‘They’ll find themselves thrown together off the back of their heroics in the community story.’

He continued: ‘It’s going to be heart-breaking and serious and hopefully start a lot of important conversations at home.’ 

The producer previously told how the storyline will involve Dev Alahan’s twin Aadi and Asha, as well as Roy’s niece Nina.

Iain is yet to disclose how the twins and Nina are involved or in what way Roy and Abi are affected, but teased that the ‘hard-hitting’plot will have ‘massive ramifications’ for those involved.  

He went on to say that the upcoming episodes will be one of the soap’s ‘biggest, serious social responsibility stories’ they’ve done, adding that not only will it will be an ‘incredibly sad and tragic’ story, but a ‘really important’ one too.

Meanwhile, Coronation Street is in the midst of a dramatic week as it celebrates it’s 60th anniversary with special episodes.

Fresh from being found guilty in her attempted murder trial, Yasmeen (Shelley King) is set for more drama as she’s left trapped on her roof after vengeful husband Geoff (Ian Bartholomew) sets her house on fire. 

While  Carla (Alison King) and Adam (Sam Robertson) battle to keep the shameful secret of their illicit night together, knowing that if the truth comes out it will ruin their lives and those around them.  

At the centre of the drama is of course Coronation Street itself as the residents unite to save the cobbles from the wicked dealings of Ray Crosby (Mark Frost). 

Having bought up most of the property and businesses in the area, Ray is ready to flatten the lot to make way for his new development.

As the bulldozers arrive on the cobbles the race is on to save the street, with many of the community pitching tents in protest. 

Show boss Iain recently admitted that filming the 60th anniversary storyline was no easy feat given the COVID-19 restrictions, admitting some stars were forced to self-isolate and get tested so they could film stunt scenes. 

Coronation Street continues Wednesday at 7.30pm on ITV.
