In the final moments of Friday’s hour-long special, a mystery attacker came into the Bistro and struck Adam (played by Sam Robertson) from behind.

In recent months he’s proceeded to alienate most of his family, including cheating on his estranged wife Sarah (Tina O’Brien) by sleeping with Peter’s partner Carla (Alison King).

The revelation, which aired on Wednesday, led alcoholic Peter (Chris Gascoyne) to hit the bottle once again, and along with growing tension between Adam and Gary (Mikey North), it’s no surprise someone on the Street would want him dead.

In the episode’s closing scenes, Gary was seen angrily brooding in the furniture shop after Adam repeatedly threatened to reveal his secret, and it remains to be seen whether he finally snapped and tried to silence him for good.

Meanwhile Sarah was seen slipping back into the Platts house, also furious with Adam after he ended their marriage when he learned she’d kept quiet about Gary’s crimes, and slept with a string of woman in the aftermath.

While Carla clearly regretted the night she slept with Adam, and pleaded with him to keep it a secret, he eventually confessed when Peter accused his brother Daniel of having an affair with Carla.

Peter was devastated to learn the love of his life had cheated on him, and Friday’s episode ended with him slumped in the street holding a bottle of whisky, so it wouldn’t be a surprise if he sought revenge and attacked Adam in a drunken rage.

In the coming weeks viewers will see Adam fight for his life in hospital as the police close in the prime suspect, and it remains to be seen whether they find the right culprit.

The dramatic scenes brought an end to a week of episodes celebrating Corrie’s 60th Anniversary, which also saw the death of abuser Geoff Metcalfe after his wife Yasmeen was acquitted in dramatic court scenes.

Coronation Street continues on Monday at 7:30pm on ITV.
