Robbie Williams nearly DIED from mercury and arsenic poisoning

Robbie Williams claims he nearly died from mercury and arsenic poisoning while on a diet high in fish.

The singer, 46, has revealed that he only got tested because his wife, Ayda Field, 41, sent him to the doctors – effectively saving his life.

‘I was eating fish twice a day and I’ve got the highest mercury poisoning the doctor has ever seen,’ he recalled of his appointment, during a chat with Radio X.

‘Do you know what I thought when I heard that? I’ve won! That’s how my ego works! I’ve got the highest… did you say the highest? Thank you,’ he went on. ‘I literally won the mercury award!’

‘I got my mercury tested because my wife’s neurotic and she gets all sorts of tests all the time. Anyway, thank God! I could’ve dropped dead of mercury and arsenic poisoning.

‘I went plant-based the next day!’

This is the second time this week that Robbie has credited Ayda for saving his life.

WHAT IS MERCURY POISONING?

Mercury naturally builds up in fish, shellfish and animals that eat fish.

Higher levels are found in fish at the top of the food chain, including marlin, shark and swordfish.

Other sources can be dental fillings.

Too much mercury exposure can damage the brain, heart, kidneys, lungs and immune system.

If the metal is in the bloodstream of unborn babies or young children, it man harm their nervous system, making them less able to think and learn.

Symptoms of mercury posioning can include:

  • Poor peripheral vision
  • Pins and needles
  • Lack of co-ordination
  • Poor speech, hearing or balance
  • Muscle weakness

A healthy person’s mercury level should be less than 10ng/mL.

A single serving of halibut, lingcod or salmon shark can exceed that, according to the Alaskan Government.

Appearing on The Jonathan Ross Show last weekend, the Candy singer became emotional when asked about his wife.

‘I look back at 15 years of being with my wife, she did, she gave me a life. Here I am on the telly getting emotional. She absolutely did,’ he said.

Robbie’s pal David Walliams, who was also a guest on Saturday’s show, said that the singer was ‘miserable’ before he ‘fell in love’ and started a family with his wife Ayda.

The comedian, 49, said: ‘I would echo what you said about Ayda, you were quite miserable before you met her. I felt like, he’s got all this success and he’s not happy.

‘It took you to really, really fall in love. Also kids are the best thing to happen, they put everything in perspective.’

Robbie and Ayda, who married in 2010, share two daughters – Theodora, eight, and Colette, two – and a son Charlton, six.

And earlier this year, they welcomed a second son Beau, who was born via the same surrogate who carried their third child Colette, known by her nickname Coco.

Speaking further about his family life, Robbie revealed that he has a different persona when performing a popstar compared with what he is like at home.

He even quipped that he does not need to ‘entertain’ and bring his well-known ‘bravado and showing off’ into his family life as his ‘wife likes’ him.

He continued: ‘At home I’m Rob. When I’m on stage I’m Robbie. People confuse me with the guy that gets on stage and gives it the big one. I wouldn’t be able to get away with that at home.

‘Robbie’s – speaking about myself in third person – that’s bravado and showing off and trying to be something in front of lots of people and trying my best to entertain them with the meagre talents I’ve got. When I go home I don’t have to do that, my wife likes me.’

The former Take That band member has been a ‘stay at home father’ to his four children for ‘nine months’ during the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

Speaking about fatherhood amid the coronavirus crisis, Robbie revealed that ‘being a dad’ has been ‘beautiful’ during the ‘awful’ year.

He said: ‘I had my hands full [in lockdown] but it’s been incredible as they now think I’m a stay at home father. They get all of me, all the time. This is the first time I’ve been out of the house for 8/9 months.

‘Covid has been awful, but for being a dad and having structure and being with them every day it’s been beautiful.’

Robbie has even channeled the difficult year into his music with his Christmas single Can’t Stop Christmas, which Ayda persuaded him to write back in August.

The father-of-four said his wife had told him not to ‘be lazy’ and gave him the idea to ‘write a song about what’s going on’ in the world amid the coronavirus pandemic.

He explained: ‘Ayda said, “Don’t be lazy”. When your wife gives you that face. She said, “There’s never been a more weird time on the planet, why don’t you write a song about what’s going on?” She said, “Call it, Can’t Stop Christmas”.

‘So off I trotted in August and got into a Christmas state of mind. You just believe it and you become it. You can access Christmas at any time. I genuinely love Christmas. I did when I was a kid.’

Robbie has returned to performing following the second Covid-19 lockdown and said it felt almost ‘robotic’ to return to the spotlight after such a long break away.

He said: ‘I’ve been with the kids for nine months, all of a sudden there’s an audience and lights and cameras and you know it’s going to be on TV with an audience of millions.

‘You feel like you’re walking with the same hand and foot and it’s robotic. It took me a few rehearsals to be ok [ahead of tonight].’
