‘Here I am resting my arm on a box of tissues while waiting for Gyles to arrive with the next gourmet meal! Sending sympathy to anyone in similar circs. Thank you & Merry Christmas to you all!”‘

Gyles joked that his idea of a ‘gourmet meal’ was baked beans on toast as he took a picture of the dish and said: ‘Well, she enjoyed them for supper. I’m sure she’ll enjoy them for breakfast, too. You can’t beat baked beans on toast, can you?’

Gyles and Michele married in secret at a Marylebone register Office in 1973 in the presence of just two witnesses, one of whom was the late Hi-De-Hi star Simon Cadell, who was Brandreth’s best friend.

In 2011, Gyles revealed he kept his marriage a secret from his parents for two years because he regarded it as a purely private matter between him and his wife.

He explained: ‘He did marry in secret and it was several years before we even told our parents that we were married.

‘It was a private thing. If you are getting married it’s about the person you are marrying, it’s about the relationship. For me it’s not about the party.

‘Our parents knew we were a couple because we were living together in a flat in Baker Street. But we agreed we wanted the wedding to be a private matter.

‘We broke the news two years later when we were expecting our first son. the biggest and loudest weddings don’t always produce the happiest marriages. Look at Charles and Di.’

He explained he felt no qualms about his wedding because his parents Charles, a lawyer, and Alice, a teacher, eloped weeks after they met playing a game of Monopoly in Christmas 1936.

Gyles’ parents were married in secret, also at Marylebone, with a local flower seller and a cleaner as witness.
