Luke Wilson says he’d ‘of course’ reprise his role in Legally Blonde 3… but is not yet attached

He first portrayed Emmett Richmond in 2001’s hit comedy Legally Blonde, before the reprising the role two years later.

And Luke Wilson says he would ‘of course’ be interested in returning to the character for a third go-round, as news has surfaced that Legally Blonde 3 is set for a 2022 release.

The Bottle Rocket star, 49, spoke to Us Magazine about his role as the love interest opposite Reese Witherspoon, but he made sure to highlight the fact that he wasn’t yet attached to the project and that he doesn’t ‘know anything [more] than the usual man on the street.’

He’s into it: Luke Wilson says he would ‘of course’ be interested in returning to the character of  Emmet Richmond for a third time, as news has surfaced that Legally Blonde 3 is happening

‘Of course [I’d do it],’ Luke said of the prospect of returning to the franchise.

‘As for the Legally Blonde that we’re hearing about now — I don’t know anything than the usual man on the street. And that’s really the truth. I’ve heard they’re writing it and trying to put it together, but they’re keeping it pretty firmly under wraps.’

In the first two legal comedies, Luke played Emmett, who eventually becomes Witherspoon‘s character Elle’s husband.

‘I loved working with Reese,’ the actor went on to say, before reflecting on the enormous success of the female empowerment-centered Legally Blonde.

‘That’s one of those movies where I never had that happen before to such a degree where when it came out, I’d go back to Texas and there would be little squadrons of girls who would come up at that age, like, 8 to 12 and 14, and they would have all these questions about Elle. They’d ask where she was and what she was doing and was she as great as she seemed,’ Wilson shared.

‘It’s just a good feeling. It’s one thing to make a movie people like, it’s another thing to make a movie that does well, but to have one that gets legs because of how people feel about it, that is a great feeling. To have a movie make a jump to generations.’

Indeed, enthusiasm for Elle Woods and the Legally Blonde franchise has remained strong, with a theatrical musical version making the jump to Broadway in 2007 and a third sequel on fans’ wishlists for years.

More recently, the original cast also reunited for a virtual fundraiser this fall, in honor of the first film’s 20th anniversary.

Wilson joined Witherspoon along with costars Selma Blair, Jennifer Coolidge, Ali Larter, Holland Taylor, Matt Davis and more.

‘It was really funny reuniting with the cast,’ Luke said. ‘It was just really fun and funny to be around all of them.

‘When I read [the script for] Legally Blonde, I just thought, “OK, I can tell what this is. It’s kind of a romantic comedy, it’s funny and it’s from that kind of era in the 90s when it came out.”‘

But then he went on to praise Reese for the timeless character she created.

‘Seeing the character Reese was doing, I was like, “This is a Saturday Night Live character. Like, she’s really committed to this.” To me, it seemed like you can sometimes try an idea and people will be like, “Well, that’s funny, but it’s a little over the top.” I was like, “Wow, she’s really going for it. This is like a Nicolas Cage type of commitment to an out-there character.”‘

Currently, Wilson lends his voice to the new animated film Bobbleheads: The Movie, opposite Cher… as well as his former Blonde costar Jennifer Coolidge.

In October, it was officially confirmed that Legally Blonde 3 is set to debut in May of 2022.
