The DIM blue line! Dopey driver who turned his BMW into a fake police car is caught using flashing lights and blaring siren by officers in a REAL unmarked vehicle

  • Black BMW fitted with flashing blue lights and siren was stopped near Cardiff
  • Police confiscated equipment for ‘destruction’ after it was removed from car
  •  Force added the driver was reported for ‘relevant offences’ after the incident

A bungling motorist who turned his BMW into a fake police car with blue flashing lights was caught by officers who passed by in a real unmarked vehicle.

The black BMW was fitted with lights and a siren in an apparent attempt to imitate a police car near Cardiff, the South Wales Police Roads Policing Unit said.

But when the motorist used these features on the road, he was stopped by undercover officers who confiscated the equipment for ‘destruction.’

The force added the driver was reported for ‘relevant offences’ after the incident.

It said: ‘Having blue flashing lights and a siren fitted to your vehicle is not acceptable.

‘Activating them when one of our unmarked units is in the area is going to get you stopped, reported for relevant offences, equipment removed by you and confiscated for destruction.’

After news of the incident was shared online, dozens of locals claimed they had spotted the car before it was stopped by South Wales Police.

One woman said: ‘The black BMW drove down Lisvane Road at high speed on Saturday.

‘The siren and blue lights were on and the siren sounded unusual.’

Another said: ‘Surely this is at least attempted impersonation.

‘Can you honestly blame people for not stopping for “unmarked” cars? How are we supposed to know the difference?

‘I’m a lone female worker who drives late at night, reassure me here please.’

Others spotted that the BMW in question had worn tyres.

One man said: ‘Must’ve been a very heavy kit you seized, too – judging by the tyre wear!?’

South Wales Police replied: ‘There’s certainly a tracking issue with the vehicle, however the ‘centre 3/4s’ of the tyre were above the legal limit… just!’

It is unclear whether the motorist was charged with any offence.
