CCTV footage shows the moment a 20-year-old man was gunned down in a fatal drive-by shooting in Birmingham

Dante Mullings died as he sat in a parked car on St Vincent Street West in Ladywood on Tuesday May 7, 2019.

Eight shots were fired at the vehicle from a passing VW Passat. Mr Mullings was shot three times, including in the lower back, but was able to escape before collapsing.

Two other passengers in the cat with Mr Mullings were also shot, but survived.

Mr Mullings was rushed to hospital, where he later died.

The court heard that the stolen Passat, was found on fire in Nechells later that night.

Police used CCTV footage to track the Passat across Birmingham, with further footage showing Dior Jackson, 20, walk from the car into a block of flats wearing a grey hoody, re-emerging minutes later having changed clothes.

Dior Jackson, 20, Ihsaan Bernard, 21, Omarni Bernard-Sewell, 21, and Ayuub Mahamood, 19, all denied conspiring to murder and possessing a gun with an intent to endanger life.

Detectives also discovered that Ayuub Mahamood, 19, contacted Hockley Car Spares on the day of the attack and collected the Passat’s cloned number plates from the business just after 2pm on May 7.

The site was raided on July 3 2019, where a machete, cloned number plates and laptop software to create registration plates was recovered.

Bernard-Sewell was arrested in his home in Selly Oak on July 16, and police bodycam footage captured the moment Bernard, of Kingstanding, was arrested at Birmingham Airport arriving from Amsterdam.

Jackson, from Great Barr, surrendered the following day and Mahmood, from Lozells, was arrested during a dawn raid on August 7.

The 9mm self-loading pistol used in the attack was found in hidden in bushes in Leicester on November 4, 2019.

Detective Inspector Hannah Whitehouse, of West Midlands Police, said: ‘The shooting was prompted by a stabbing the previous day.

‘The defendants were all friends or associates of the victim and made a pact to exact revenge.

‘However, neither Dante Mullings nor the other two men in the car were involved in the knife attack.

‘We don’t think they were specifically targeted but that the defendants drove around Ladywood searching for anyone associated to the group.

‘Unfortunately for Dante, they came across him and his friends first.

‘We know Dior Jackson was in the VW Passat at the time alongside another man.

‘We weren’t able to prove who pulled the trigger – but we were able to show this group plotted together to carry out the shooting. And therefore they were jointly liable.’

All four men were found guilty of the charges at Birmingham Crown Court on February 4 and are due to be sentence at a later date.

A 16-year-old boy was also charged with conspiracy to murder and is set to stand trial on May 17.

Two other men, Mohammed Qadir, 20, and Wasim Hussain, 26, were cleared by a jury of involvement.
