The government has been told it ‘must be more proactive’ in dealing with the involvement of an alleged crime lord in boxing.

Daniel Kinahan, who has no criminal convictions but has previously been named in Irish courts as the boss of a major drugs cartel, confirmed last week that he is still organising multiple world-title fights.

He has previously advised Tyson Fury and Billy Joe Saunders, among other prominent names.

On the back of media scrutiny, Stephen Farry MP, the deputy leader of the Alliance Party, asked the Department of Culture Media and Sport on Tuesday what plans it had to introduce regulation around advisors in boxing.

The DCMS replied that fit and proper person tests ‘are a matter for the national governing bodies’ and that ‘we do not intend to intervene in this autonomy at this time but we expect national governing bodies and competition structures to put adequate levels of protections in place’.

Farry later tweeted: ‘We take very seriously the issues raised across the media re Daniel Kinahan and his involvement in boxing.

‘DCMS must be much more proactive in addressing this urgently. We will be following up further.’
