Contestant on ‘Icelandic University Challenge’ storms off set

Sore loser! Contestant on ‘Icelandic University Challenge’ throws a strop and storms off set after rival team answers winning question

  • The disgruntled student had been taking part in Icelandic TV show Gettu Betur
  • Young man was quick to show fierce disapproval when the opposing team won
  • He smashed glass to floor, tipped his podium and threw water at his teammates

This is the bizarre moment a contestant on the ‘Icelandic University Challenge’ had a temper tantrum and stormed off set after the opposing team correctly answered the winning question.

The disgruntled student, Jón Jörund Guðmundsson, had been taking part in the TV show Gettu Betur – which translates to Make a Better Guess.

But, when his rivals were crowned winners, the young man was quick to show his fierce disapproval.

He smashed a glass to the floor before jumping to his feet, tipping his podium and throwing water in the direction of his own teammates.

The sore loser then stormed through the studio and could be heard causing more chaos off camera – as the others watched in astonishment.

In the clip, which aired on February 19, we see the captain of the ‘red’ team, from secondary school Tækniskólinn, Reykjavík, seconds after answering the final question of the competition – which is about female tennis players.

There is a brief pause before host Kristjana Arnarsdóttir nods and confirms he is correct before the studio audience burst into applause.

But not everyone is quite so congratulatory as Jon, who is a member of the opposing ‘blue’ team from school Fjölbrautaskólinn við Ármúla, also in Reykjavík, reacts with fury.

He grabs hold of a glass of water that has been sitting on his podium and hurls it aggressively at the studio floor.

His fellow contestants let out gasps of shock as the glass clatters along the ground – but he is not finished yet.

The riled student then immediately gets to his feet and pushes his podium over.

The captain of his team attempts to calm him down but with little effect as he grabs another glass – this time from her podium – and launches the water in the direction of his own teammates.

It can be heard smashing as Jon storms through the studio before even more commotion is heard off screen.

Gettu Betur, which was first broadcast in 1986, sees two teams from Iceland’s high schools or colleges go head-to-head.

The first two preliminary rounds are broadcast on the radio, followed by a televised quarter-final, semi-final and final.
