MAFS Australia’s Jules and Cam admit it wasn’t ‘love at first sight’

They were undoubtedly the loved-up success story of Married At First Sight Australia’s sixth season.

But Jules Robinson and Cameron Merchant admitted on Monday it wasn’t ‘love at first sight’ as they reflected on their romance journey in the captivating TV experiment.

The duo said the key to success in their relationship is being open with each other as they fired back at castmember Jessika Power’s claims that their connection is ‘unbelievable’ because they’ve never argued.

Wow: Married At First Sight Australia’s Jules Robinson and Cameron Merchant admitted on Tuesday it wasn’t ‘love at first sight’ as they reflected on their journey to love in the captivating TV experiment

‘No, no, it wasn’t love at first sight,’ Jules, 38, laughed while talking to The Times. ‘Cam wasn’t someone I’d have looked at twice in the street.

While Cam, 37, nodded in agreement, the red-haired beauty admitted they ‘weren’t what each other ordered,’ as she expected a tall suitor while Cam envisioned a blonde match.

But she confirmed she was immediately drawn to her partner when they met for the first time down the aisle, saying she felt relaxed by his calm demeanor and unwavering moral compass.

‘It wasn’t love at first sight, but it was a vibe at first sight,’ added Cam who was joined in the interview by the couple’s four-month-old baby Oliver.

Their synergy and connection as a couple was unfaltering throughout the TV programme, which was initially shot in 2018.

Cam and Jules – whose ceremony wasn’t legally binding on the show – went on to tie the knot in 2019 and currently live together in Sydney with their tiny tot.

Despite proving their relationship has stood the test of time, fellow MAFS star Jessika, 29, suggested their romance wasn’t real, even going as far as to say they met before the show.

When asked about her comments, an unimpressed Jules responded: ‘It’s really disappointing. Anyone who knows us knows that’s completely not true. We’d have to be bloody good actors, that’s all I can say.’

However the show, which paid participants approximately AU$150 (£84) a day, would steer the couples in certain directions to heighten moments of drama.

Cam confirmed that once he mentioned to producers that he felt he was falling in love with Jules, they ‘urged’ him to tell her. Nevertheless, the couple insist nothing is staged.

Meanwhile Jess sent shock waves through the show after confessing her feelings for brawny car broker Dan Webb, 36, despite the fact that she was matched with her husband, Mick Gould, 33, and had already propositioned Nicolas Jovanovic, 30.

Speaking to Entertainment Daily, Jess, who was accused of smirking while Mick cried over her betrayal, said she now realises she had no empathy for her castmates at the time because she was ‘broken inside.’

With no further explanation given, Jess said: ‘Watching back my time on the show I really regret the amount of pain I inflicted on Mick and Tamara [Joy], the situation could have been handled so differently.

‘I also had no sense of empathy or emotion and had my nose in everyone’s business.

‘It’s really hard watching that Jess back because it’s so clear to me how broken I was inside, as a person to be that way towards others.’

Jess famously had several feuds with other castmembers, including Cyrell Paule, 29, and Ning Surasiang, 35, who she told couldn’t trust her husband Mark Scrivens, 43.

She also famously had a major feud with Mike Gunner after he accused her of s**t stirring on the show.

But she refuses to blame the show’s editing for how she came across.

Jess said: ‘I feel that everyone could put their hand up and say they got a bad edit! I wasn’t the nicest on the show and my behaviour towards the end was deplorable, but I still do have nice qualities.

‘I do wish we [me and Dan] had just put our foot down and said, “Look we want to send our partners home but we want to stay”.’

The couple have since gone their separate ways despite declaring their love for one another after just three weeks into the experiment.
