Vicky McClure jokes that she could end up marrying fiancé Jonny Owen at Gretna Green

Line of Duty’s Vicky McClure has joked that she and her fiancé could end up getting married at Gretna Green after her nuptials were put on hold due to the pandemic.

The actress, 37, got engaged to producer Jonny Owen, 49, in December 2017 but has admitted she still hasn’t even booked a venue for the big day.

Speaking on the Graham Norton Show about putting off her wedding plans because of lockdown she said: ‘We didn’t get married, but we haven’t even booked it.’

She added: ‘I’d marry him tomorrow, but we’ve never got around to cementing the plan. We will probably end up at Gretna Green!’ – referring to the Scottish village which is famous for runaway weddings.

The star announced her engagement to Jonny three years ago after meeting while shooting his film Svengali in 2012.

Last November, Vicky shared a sweet snap with her love after three months apart after she had finished filming the sixth season of Line Of Duty.

In her caption, Vicky admitted she hadn’t found it ‘easy’ being away from Jonny for so long, but hailed her fellow cast and crew for their hard work on set.

She gushed: ‘Home❣️ 3 months away from home not easy…but we have the BEST crew who’ve kept each other safe, kept spirits high, couldn’t of been on any other job through this. I love you all LOD lot!!!!!’

In 2019, Vicky spoke candidly about her love life while on Elizabeth Day’s How To Fail podcast, as she admitted she ‘just knew’ her fiancé was the one when they first met.

The star revealed: ‘When we first spoke it was on the phone. I came off the phone and I just knew. I absolutely know.’

Following their conversation, Vicky explained that she googled her future husband-to-be and discovered he was married, but said that when they met ‘he was in the middle of a divorce.’

She said honestly: ‘It was tricky. I thought ‘I am scared now, I genuinely feel something I’ve never felt before. He’s a proper man. He’s a grownup.”

The pair were set to appear in the film Svengali together, and the This Is England actress revealed: ‘We got to talking about love. And just the way he was describing it: I was like ‘Oh My God. He’s the man for me.”

Vicky went on: ‘We literally lived together from a week of meeting. We have basically stayed together from that time until now. We’ve never lived apart. Seven years in March. I am not sure about fate but I couldn’t see my life without him.

‘I’ve never loved anyone more than I’ve loved Jonny. It sounds cheesy but I love him more and more every day. Things get better and better. Seven years with someone – I feel really lucky. I’ve had relationships where I didn’t have that.’

Saying that she struggled with other relationships as she wasn’t ‘grown-up enough’, Vicky added: ‘When you finally meet someone who gets you, lets you fly, loves you for who you are and you can have that genuine laughter’ it’s amazing.

The couple got engaged over a morning cuppa during a romantic stroll in Nottingham but waited until a few days later to make the happy announcement.

Opening up to the Nottingham Post about the proposal Vicky said: ‘We stayed at home for the first time together on Christmas Eve so had Christmas morning together.

‘He popped the question over a cup of tea – we moved onto the bubbles by 8.30am.’

As well as Svengali, the pair appeared together on-screen when Jonny took on the role of Taff in This is England 90.

Vicky appeared on the Graham Norton Show alongside fellow Line of Duty star Adrian Dunbar who plays Superintendent Ted Hastings in the hit BBC police drama set to return later this month.

The actress spoke about the success of the show and the 13 million viewers that tuned in for the last series.

She said: ‘It’s mad! It was a slow burn. The first series was great, but we didn’t know we would get a second one.

‘Then we got a second one and halfway through that suddenly the numbers built and since then it’s just taken off – it’s big and the anticipation is massive. It’s intense.’
