A British woman has been arrested after killing a delivery driver in a head-on smash as she drove the wrong way along a Costa del Sol dual carriageway.

The 35-year-old was found hiding in bushes by the side of the road by police after attempting to flee the scene of the accident in her damaged Mercedes then getting out and continuing on foot.

Police sources said she appeared to be so drunk they couldn’t breathalyse her.

She was taken to hospital for alcohol and drugs tests but the results have not yet been made public.

The delivery driver killed in the smash has been named as 28-year-old Colombian Juan David.

The accident happened around 8.30pm on Saturday on the A-7 dual-carriageway near the turn-off for the upmarket holiday resort of Puerto Banus.

The unnamed Brit, who lives in the area, hit the moped rider about 437 yards past the Puerto Banus exit before continuing for around 500 feet and getting out of her vehicle, a rented Mercedes GLA 200.

The moped burst into flames which also affected the British woman’s car.

Distressing footage from the scene as police and emergency responders arrived showed the attempts to revive the dead man as he lay on the ground near his burning moped.

One of the officials could be overheard telling a passing motorist the Mercedes driver had been going up the dual-carriageway the wrong way and fled the scene after the smash.

The woman driver, thought to be from Liverpool, was arrested after being discovered in bushes by a nearby garage car wash.

Unconfirmed local reports said she had already called for a taxi before she was held.

Police have yet to make any official comment about the incident but are expected to do so once the Brit has appeared in court.

She is expected to face charges including manslaughter, road traffic offences and leaving the scene of an accident.

A spokesman for a regional emergency services co-ordination centre confirmed: ‘A man aged 28 died on Saturday evening in a traffic accident between a moped and a car on the A-7 in Marbella.

‘The accident occurred at kilometre 174 around 8.30pm and led to the two vehicles involved catching fire.

‘Civil Guard, local police, paramedics and firefighters from Marbella and San Pedro were mobilised.’

The moped rider worked for Spanish start-up Glovo.

Colleague Alex Gonzalez said: ‘We’re all devastated by what’s happened. I hope justice is done.’

Antonio Garcia added: ‘A poor innocent man who was going about his daily life has died because of the actions of a reckless person.’
