Not so happy campers! IKEA divides opinion with $35 outdoor cushion that turns into a sleeping bag and a COAT

  • IKEA have released a $35.99 cushion that can turn into a sleeping bag and a coat
  • Named FÄLTMAL, 75×47 inches cushion comes in deep green with black fishnet
  • Made of 100 percent Nylon, once unfolded it can be worn, thanks to its sleeves

If travel restrictions mean you’re eyeing a camping holiday rather than a week in the sun, IKEA has released a smart cushion that can double as a sleeping bag and a coat.

Designer with campers in mind, the FÄLTMAL $34.99 cushion opens up to unfold as a sleeping bag, can be worn like a coat thanks to two sleeves, and buttons up at the back of the head, so it can be slipped on and taken off without fuss.

Newly arrived on the retailer’s US site, it’s expected to be available for UK customers in the coming weeks.

The original design is made of 100 percent Nylon and recycled materials, but after hitting the Swedish furniture giant’s website, the cushion’s cocoon-like appearance gathered mixed reaction online.

The FÄLTMAL comes in green and measures 75×47 inches. A smart fishnet pocket on its side means it can bu used to put away books or documents if needed.

It comes with a button at the back to ‘keep it from sliding off when you reach for your coffee,’ IKEA’s website reads.

When times comes to pack up, the coat-quilt can easily be folded back into a cushion thanks to the zipper on its side.

The low maintenance items can be put into the washing machine and the tumble dryer if need be.

On the website, IKEA  amused fans by keeping the reveal inside the product description, presenting the pillow as a normal item before uncovering its unique coat function.

People online shared their thoughts on the unusual yet practical items, perfect for camping getaways.

‘I love how the big reveal is three photos in and then it’s right back to being a normal (ish) pillow,’ one joked about the IKEA pictures.

In France, where IKEA is extremely popular, people were enthralled by the idea, but some couldn’t resist poking fun at its design.

‘The man presenting it on the site doesn’t look very convinced,’ one joked.

But another account argued the 3-in-one cushion would be a hit this summer, with many holidaymakers turning to camping due to the coronavirus pandemic regulations and the uncertainly surrounding vacation rentals.
