More stars heading to Australia: Viggo Mortensen and Colin Farrell set to film Ron Howard’s new film

Australia continues its transformation into Hollywood 2.0 as Colin Farrell and Viggo Mortensen undergo quarantine in Sydney ahead of filming director Ron Howard’s Thirteen Lives

A series of American productions have moved to Australia amid the coronavirus pandemic, with the land Down Under earning the nickname ‘Hollywood 2.0’. 

The Tinseltown exodus shows no signs of slowing down, with Viggo Mortensen and Colin Farrell set to film Ron Howard’s Thirteen Lives in Queensland.  

The stars are believed to currently be completing mandatory hotel quarantine in Sydney, The Courier Mail reports.

Irish actor actor Colin, 44, and American star Viggo, 62, followed director Ron, 67, who arrived in Australia in January. 

The acclaimed director completed his mandatory 14 days of hotel quarantine with his wife Cheryl, and has been sharing Instagram images praising Australia. 

Production on Thirteen Lives began in March, with the Gold Coast hinterland doubling for the film’s base of Thailand.

The film will tell the story of the dramatic 2018 rescue of 12 young boys and their soccer coach after they ventured deep into a cave which later became flooded.

Production is also expected to inject more than $96million into the local economy, and create jobs for 435 cast and crew members, as well as an additional 3,400 background actors.    

The arrival of Colin and Viggo follows news Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence is expected to travel to Australia soon to film the latest Fantastic Four film, according to The Daily Telegraph

The paper reports that the Marvel superhero film franchise is set to ‘bed down’ in Australia ‘for the foreseeable future’. 

Currently in production in Sydney is the new Thor: Love and Thunder film, starring Natalie Portman, Chris Hemsworth, Christian Bale, Matt Damon and Chris Pratt.  

It also comes on the back of news that Julia Roberts and Sean Penn are expected to film a new political thriller in Sydney, with Julia arriving earlier this month. 

Zac Efron was also recently in South Australia to film the Stan original movie Gold and is currently filming his Netflix series Down To Earth in the region.
