Gwyneth Paltrow says her 1999 Oscar win was ‘overwhelming’ and she ‘hid for three weeks afterward’

She was the surprise winner of the Best Actress Academy Awards at the 1999 Oscars.

And in an interview with Anna Faris for the Mom star’s podcast, Gwyneth Paltrow said she had found the attention that came with the win ‘overwhelming’.

‘I remember I was staying with my parents at their house in Santa Monica and I just kind of hid for three weeks afterward,’ she said. ‘It was so intense.’

Emotional moment: Gwyneth Paltrow said Monday that she found her 1999 Best Actress Oscar win for Shakespeare In Love ‘overwhelming’ and ‘intense’

Paltrow was 26 when she took home Hollywood’s top honor for her leading role in Shakespeare In Love.

She’d celebrated her big night with her father, director Bruce Paltrow, and her mother, actress Blythe Danner.

Looking back now, Paltrow, 48, described the whole Oscar experience as ‘really strange’ and ‘lonely.’

‘In L.A. everybody was so supportive,’ Paltrow said on Monday’s episode of Anna Faris Is Unqualified.

‘I remember winning and feeling like the tide sort of turned and there was this feeling of when you have that much attention on you and that much energy, it was really, really overwhelming.’

And while she’d been the focus of a very high profile Oscar campaign for Shakespeare in Love by Harvey Weinstein and Miramax, Paltrow insists she never expected to win.

‘It was the weirdest most surreal time,’ the actress explained.

‘You’re also kind of embarrassed that you’re nominated for an Oscar and you have imposter syndrome and you think, ‘I can’t even believe this is happening. I’m not even that good. Does everybody hate me?”

‘I was kind of like, ‘Well, of course, I’m not going to win but it’s kind of cool, too,’ she added.
