Gloria Henry, known for her role as mother on Dennis The Menace, dies one day after 98th birthday

Gloria Henry – who is best known her her role as mother Alice Mitchell in classic sitcom Dennis The Menace – has died just one day after her 98th birthday.

The veteran actress – who has starred in movies alongside Hollywood legends including Gene Autry and Lucille Ball – died at her home in Los Angeles on Sunday. 

Henry’s daughter Erin Ellwood confirmed the news to The Hollywood Reporter on Sunday.

That same day Erin took to her Instagram to share a photo of her talented mother standing in front of the Global Angel Wings Project piece in Downtown LA’s Arts District with a heartfelt caption.

She wrote: ‘She’s flying now, free of her body. She left on a countdown 4 3 2 1 @ 3:40pm. She was such an incredible woman in so many ways. This last year with her has been beautiful and heartbreaking. 

‘Thank you all for following me and supporting me on this journey – this beautiful land mine. Goodbye Momma, I love your guts forever [heart emoji]’

From 1959 to 1963, Henry starred as Alice Mitchell on Dennis The Menace over four seasons.

She starred opposite Herbert Anderson as hapless husband, Henry, and Jay North as the titular character based on  Hank Ketcham’s comic book character.

Of her signature role, Henry aid in a 2011 interview with KTLA-TV Los Angeles: ‘Many of the fans say, ‘Oh, I always wished you were my mom’ and ‘My mom was jealous of you, because I wanted you for a mom.

‘Which is pretty funny, because I don’t think my own children felt that way.’

On Henry’s birthday, Erin shared a photo of a card from Dennis The Menace cartoonist Marcus Hamilton featuring the famous character holding a cake with candles spelling out ’98.’

Her daughter captioned the image: ‘HAPPY BIRTHDAY MOMMA! It’s been a rough month – we weren’t sure if she would make it to 98, but she did!

Before her role on the classic sitcom, Henry starred alongside Cowboy Gene Autry in The Strawberry Roan (1948) and Riders In The Sky (1949).

She also appeared with Lucille Ball and William Holden in 1949’s Miss Grant Takes Richmond.

Her first role was in 1947 drama Sport Of Kings.

After Dennis the Menace, she had two guest roles in TV series Hazel in 1963 and The Farmer’s Daughter (1965) before taking an over decade-and-a-half hiatus from acting.  

In the 1980s and 90s she earned guest starring roles on shows including Newhart, Simon & Simon, Silver Spoons, Dallas, Doogie Howser M.D. and Mr. Belvedere.

Her final credit came  in 1 2012 episode of Parks And Recreation as she played Mary-Elizabeth Clinch.

Henry was born in New Orleans on April 2, 1923 and is survived by her three children, daughter Erin and sons Jeffrey and Adam, whom she shared with her late ex-husband Craig Ellwood.

She and Craig, who was a Los Angeles architect, were married from 1949 to 1977 as he died in 1992.
