A mugger has returned hundreds of pounds in stolen cash to his victim after finding out the money was destined for the local mosque.

The balaclava-clad thief was filmed posting a wad of notes through the victim’s letterbox in Small Heath, Birmingham, on Easter Monday.

The theft was captured on CCTV and an appeal to find the thieves quickly spread on social media.

After the muggers heard of the growing outrage in the community, they returned to the road at night to give back the money.

They said ‘we would never rob from a mosque’ and blamed their actions on ‘false information’.

Footage of the theft shows the lone victim walking down the road carrying a bag – unaware he is being stalked by two masked thieves travelling in a black car.

They park in the middle of the road and jump out, as one rushes towards the man and snatches his bag before the pair make their escape in the vehicle.

But hours later the panicking thief was filmed by his accomplice outside the victim’s house holding a stack of £20 notes.

He tells the camera: ‘I’m here to return his money. We didn’t know it was mosque money. We would never rob from a mosque, it was just based on false information.’

The crook then creeps towards the house and has a nervous look over his shoulder before stuffing the money through the door and leaving in a hurry.

Sajid Ali, 49, a father of three from the street, said: ‘It’s all been resolved in the community now, the lads that took the money have given it back.

‘When they robbed him they found out the money for charity, for the mosque and posted it back.

‘It went viral on social media and because they were local lads they thought they’d get caught anyway and posted it back.

‘They did a good deed when they knew it was charity. They must’ve realised it came from an Islamic shop that takes donations for the mosque and it’s Ramadan next week.

‘I’ve no idea how much was taken but it would’ve been a lot because people brought donations to the shop before Ramadan starts.

‘I live just around the corner and came by the shop to see if he’s OK.

‘The matter’s been resolved and the community doesn’t want it to go any further. There’s no point chasing them down.

‘They filmed themselves giving it back because it went viral on social media and if they are local they knew they wouldn’t get away with it.’

A resident on Kenelm Road, who refused to give his name, said: ‘Yes, it happened around here but I don’t want to disclose any more details.’

Another resident added: ‘I know the man and the video you’re talking about and he works in the Islamic shop.’

West Midlands Police has been approached for comment.
