Harry Kane could still make the Carabao Cup final

Harry Kane could still make the Carabao Cup final as Ryan Mason refuses to rule him out of Sunday’s Wembley showdown with Manchester City despite another ankle injury forcing him off against Everton

Tottenham‘s interim manager Ryan Mason has refused to rule Harry Kane out of the Carabao Cup final.

Kane twisted an ankle playing against Everton, on Friday, and is yet to return to training but Spurs have not given up hope of their top scorer being fit for Sunday’s Wembley showpiece against Manchester City.

‘It’s one of those cases where we’re taking it day by day,’ said 29-year-old Mason, thrust into the role after Jose Mourinho was sacked on Monday.

‘He didn’t train today. We’re still not sure about the weekend yet but what we do know is that Harry is working extremely hard to get over this injury.’

Kane is not expected to play any part in Mason’s first game in charge, at home against Southampton on Wednesday, when the former Spurs and England midfielder will become the youngest manager in Premier League history.

‘My most important role is to try to get some positive results for the football club,’ said Mason, who steps up from his role working with Tottenham’s young players. ‘I think it helps that I know a lot of the lads and have good relationships but it’s a really good group of guys.

‘They’re professional and work hard so that’s all you ask for as a coach. They’re willing to learn, willing to work and it’s something to look forward to.’

Mason was summoned by chairman Daniel Levy to hold the fort after Mourinho’s sacking.

‘We had a very long conversation once the news broke,’ he said. ‘I was in the building anyway because I had been working with the younger lads.

‘I took training and then we had another conversation and he asked me if I wanted it and if I was happy to help the club. I was, and the group were happy as well which is the most important thing and we look forward.

‘There are many different emotions going through my body at the moment but probably the most important one is pride. It’s no secret that I love this football club, it’s in my heart, it’s in my blood, of course it is.

‘One thing I can guarantee is that I’ll give my all in the next seven games to prepare players to win football matches. The pride I feel is amazing. It’s one of those where I’ll probably not be able to take it in until the season’s done but of course at the moment I feel immense pride.’
