Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believes Edinson Cavani is edging closer to staying at Manchester United for another season.

The Uruguay star looked to be heading for the Old Trafford exit this summer after expressing a desire to return to South America with Argentine club Boca Juniors.

But United have been working hard to persuade Cavani not to leave just eight months after arriving as a free agent, and are increasingly hopeful the 34-year-old striker will have a change of heart.

Cavani has underlined his importance to United with seven goals in his last six games, including four in their 8-5 aggregate win over AS Roma in the Europa League semi-final.

Solskjaer is well aware how difficult it would be to replace the former Paris Saint-Germain and Napoli striker, particularly given that United’s transfer budget has been hit hard by the pandemic.

The United boss sounded optimistic about Cavani’s future when asked about the situation following Thursday’s second leg in Rome.

‘We don’t have time limit, but the more goals he scores, the better we become as a team, the bigger the chance is that he’ll want to have this feeling again,’ said Solskjaer.

‘Let’s talk after Sunday again hopefully. Maybe it’s changed. Maybe he’s decided. Maybe.’
