PSG ‘have entered the race to sign Sergio Ramos’, with Real Madrid star a free agent this summer having failed to sign a new deal… but ‘he hasn’t given up on agreeing fresh terms’

Paris Saint-Germain have signalled their interest in signing Real Madrid legend Sergio Ramos.

The defender, who has spent 16 years with the Spanish giants, remains at loggerheads with Real over a contract extension, which if unresolved will see him leave on a free transfer this summer.

While several clubs are said to be keen on securing the 35-year-old’s services, PSG have emerged as Ramos’ most likely destination, according to Spanish outlet AS

The sticking point for Ramos is the length of his contract extension. While he has said he would like to see out his career with Real Madrid, the club is only prepared to give him a one-year contract, whereas the defender wants two years.

With the LaLiga season ending in two weeks, and Ramos’ contract expiring a month after that, Real Madrid are holding firm on their offer, leaving the Spaniard open to a free transfer elsewhere.

PSG manager Mauricio Pochettino did not deny his interest in Ramos when addressing the situation in a press conference earlier this week.

‘Sergio Ramos to PSG? I’m not going to answer because anything could be misinterpreted… Sergio is currently a Real Madrid player,’ he said.

‘But what I can tell you is that, like every team, we all want to improve certain positions.’

A number of Premier League clubs will be interested in Ramos’ experience and leadership qualities – having seen the positive impact of Thiago Silva at Chelsea – but PSG have potentially greater funding than any of their competitors.

Manchester United are also linked with Ramos – but he has deviously used the club’s interest to win a new contract with Real once before, back in 2015, which left a bitter taste.
