  • Bayern Munich talisman’s fine scoring form has led to interest from several clubs
  • L’Equipe claim that PSG may move for Lewandowski if Kylian Mbappe moves on
  • The club are aware a big name will be needed to save face after an Mbappe exit

Bayern Munich ace Robert Lewandowski has sensationally emerged as a potential target for Paris Saint-Germain this summer, according to reports.

The red-hot veteran matched Gerd Muller’s record of scoring 40 Bundesliga goals in a single season this weekend and his fine form is said to have triggered PSG to ponder over a move for him.

Any swoop would depend on whether Kylian Mbappe departs the Parc des Princes, L’Equipe have claimed, and Lewandowski is viewed as a big-name addition that would help the club ‘save face’.

Lewandowski joining PSG would certainly cause a splash, but the same outlet in France have also reported that the 32-year-old is weighing up taking a new challenge at the end of the season.

Having starred across his seven years in Bavaria, the former Borussia Dortmund man would be welcomed with open arms at PSG – although his club have declared it almost unthinkable that they would willingly sell up.

Despite having a deal that runs until 2023, Lewandowski will have no shortage of interest. Chelsea, Manchester City and Real Madrid have all been tipped to take part in a bidding war when the transfer window opens.

Mbappe, meanwhile, is also similarly coveted by a number of elite clubs across Europe. The 22-year-old is set to walk away in the summer of 2022 and has been labelled as ‘hesitant’ over penning an extension.

The starlet is the top scorer in Ligue 1 this season, having netted 25 goals, but PSG are on the cusp of losing their crown with Lille top of the table.

Mauricio Pochettino’s team were also knocked out of the Champions League at the semi-final stage at the hands of City, and Mbappe may very well believe he has achieved all he can at the club.

Real Madrid have long since been touted to move for the ex-Monaco prodigy, while Liverpool and Manchester United have also been linked.

Boss Pochettino has insisted that keeping Mbappe is a ‘fundamental priority’ but there is still a risk that talks may break down. As a result, the club may have to sanction a sale this summer.

L’Equipe’s report goes on to say that this scenario is not being seriously considered at this moment, although PSG are aware they would have to ‘strike hard’ should Mbappe leave.

Both him and Lewandowski are likely to stay at their current clubs, though, with Lewandowski on the chase to now usurp Muller’s impressive record.

He was treated to an impromptu guard of honour at the side of the pitch after converting a penalty in Bayern’s 2-2 draw with Freiburg, as that effort saw him match the milestone.

Lewandowski will set a new Bundesliga best with a goal against Augsburg at the Allianz Arena in Bayern’s final fixture of the season.

Currently, the Poland international is second on the all-time Bundesliga top scorers list with 276 goals. He is 89 behind the record, which is also held by the legendary Muller and stands at 365.
