A road rule question asking who has the right of way between a car, motorbike and pedestrian has stumped drivers.

The Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads posted the quiz to its Facebook page on Monday to test drivers’ knowledge.

A graphic shows a red car waiting to turn left on a two-way street, a motorbike indicating a right turn, and pedestrians waiting to cross the road both vehicles are turning into.

WHO HAS RIGHT OF WAY?

  • Red car, motorbike, pedestrians 0 votes
  • Motorbike, red car, pedestrians 0 votes
  • Pedestrians, red car, motorbike 0 votes
  • Pedestrians, motorbike, red car 0 votes

‘The driver of the red car was to turn left at the T intersection, the motorbike rider is turning right, and the pedestrians are crossing the terminating road. So who goes first?’ the department asked.

The department offered four different orders for motorists to choose from.

‘A. Red car, motorbike, pedestrians. B. Motorbike, red car, pedestrians. C. Pedestrians, red car, motorbike. D. Pedestrians, motorbike, red car.’

Social media users flocked to the comments section to share their answers.

‘If I was the pedestrian I’d wait until the car and the motorbike had turned,’ one person said.

‘If I am a pedestrian, A. If I’m driving, C,’ someone else joked.

Another person suggested pedestrians should be let past first.

‘Amazing how the idea that the person operating dangerous equipment has a responsibility to others surprises people,’ they said.

According to Queensland transport and safety, drivers and motorbike riders must give way to pedestrians on or entering a road they are turning into.

When turning right, drivers and riders must also give way to anyone turning left at an intersection.

Therefore, the correct answer is C – pedestrian, red car, motorbike.
