The pop superstar first sported the new hairstyle in an Instagram post on April 25, but he previously debuted the look in the spring of 2016, though they were short-lived.

Plenty of his fans approved of the new look, but it wasn’t a hit outside of his regular circles, where many accused him of cultural appropriation.

Jamaican Rastafarians were the first to use the name ‘dreadlocks,’ and today many people consider white people wearing the hairstyle to be a form of cultural appropriation.
