An Inter Milan statement read: ‘FC Internazionale Milano would like to welcome Simone Inzaghi to the Club, as our new First Team Coach. The Italian manager has signed a two-year deal with the Nerazzurri. #WelcomeSimone’

His departure from Lazio could see former Napoli boss Maurizio Sarri take over as his replacement, with the ex-Chelsea coach said to be in talks.

The Rome outfit hinted they were unhappy about the manner of Inzaghi’s departure – failing to even name him when announcing he was set to leave.

Lazio wrote: ‘We respect the rethinking of a coach and, first of all, of a player who for many years has linked his name to the Lazio family and to the many Biancocelesti successes.’

Inzaghi’s swift appointment at Inter is a boost for the club, who faced the prospect of selling a number of their top stars as they grapple with a financial crisis.

Inter’s owner Suning and president Steven Zhang reportedly wanted to slash the wage bill by 20 per cent and make a profit of around 100 million euros in the transfer market, likely by selling at least one of the club’s most important players.

One of those stars mooted for an exit was forward Romelu Lukaku, but the Belgian revealed he has held talks with Inzaghi and was committed to the club.

‘Yes, I am staying,’ he told Dutch broadcaster VTM.

‘I’ve already had contact with the man who normally becomes our new manager. Maybe I shouldn’t say that yet… but it was a very positive conversation.

‘There’s also the challenge of doing it again [winning the league with Inter]. I feel good at Inter.’

Inzaghi ended his playing career with Lazio before joining their coaching staff – taking over as interim boss in at the end of the 15-16 campaign after the sacking of Stefano Pioli. But following Marcelo Bielsa’s resignation after just one week the following season, he became the permanent boss.

Under his leadership, Lazio won the Coppa Italia in 2018-19, and well as the Italian Super Cup in 2017 and 2019. His side finished sixth in Serie A this season.
