Sterling’s 57th-minute strike from Kalvin Phillips‘ neat through-ball was enough to secure victory as the Three Lions won the first match of a Euros for the first time.
After Gareth Southgate‘s men held on for a morale-boosting three points, Kane took to social media to express his delight.

Kane then also paid tribute to former Tottenham team-mate Christian Eriksen after he collapsed in Denmark’s game against Finland on Saturday.

Goalscorer Sterling himself tweeted: ‘This one’s for you guys!! We turned up. #BoyFromBrent’.
Kieran Trippier, who was a surprise choice at left back ahead of Luke Shaw and Ben Chilwell, also paid tribute to former team-mate Eriksen.

Declan Rice, like Phillips, is another newcomer at international tournament level and said: ‘Just getting started! Great win and performance to start the euros! The support today was incredible. Thank you @England’.

England’s next game in Group D is against Scotland next Friday at 8pm, before their final match the following Tuesday at the same time. Both matches are at Wembley.
