Real Sociedad have failed with a last-minute attempt to hijack Arsenal’s swoop for Benfica defender Nuno Tavares.

The Gunners are on the verge of completing a £7million deal for the versatile full-back, with the move expected to be completed in the coming days.

But LaLiga club Sociedad came in with a last-ditch attempt to scupper the move after making a proposal, understood to be more substantial than Arsenal’s, to Tavares over the last few days.

Sportsmail understands Portuguese agent Cesar Boaventura and UK-based agency Sync Global played a key role in ensuring Tavares’ transfer closed with Arsenal instead of Sociedad.

Despite Sociedad’s offer being more lucrative, Boaventura moved quickly to ensure the deal for Tavares to join Arsenal remained on courses.

The 21-year-old made 20 appearances for the Portuguese giants last season and is expected to challenge Kieran Tierney, who has recently signed a new five -ear deal, for the left back position.
