Lee Carsley is set to be named the new England Under 21 manager after the FA offered the former Everton and Republic of Ireland midfielder a two-year contract.

The 47-year-old will replace Aidy Boothroyd, with his first game against Romania in Bucharest on September 3.

Carsley is head coach of the England Under 20s, but only arrived at St George’s Park last year, since when he has made a major impression on Gareth Southgate‘s senior coaching team.

He has spent the majority of his coaching career working with junior teams at Brentford, Manchester City and Birmingham.

This will be Carsley’s first permanent management role.

Former England defender Sol Campbell and England Under 19 coach Justin Cochrane were among the other candidates interviewed for the job.
