Tottenham have reportedly agreed a deal for Toby Alderweireld to join Qatar side Al-Duhail.

The 32-year-old centre-back has been at the club for six seasons after his arrival from Atletico Madrid in 2015.

Spurs are trying to negotiate a deal for Atalanta defender Cristian Romero as new manager Nuno Espirito Santo looks to reshape the team’s defence.

The Telegraph have reported that Alderweireld is close to joining the Qatar-based side and the move is subject to the player agreeing personal terms and flying to the Middle East to complete a medical.

Alderweireld has just one year left on his current Tottenham deal and is looking to leave the club, while Tottenham would prefer not to lose him for nothing next year.

Belgian side Royal Antwerp had an approach turned down earlier in the summer which would have seen the Belgian centre-back return to his hometown, where he played before joining Ajax’s youth set-up.

Al-Duhail already have one Belgian player on their books in Edmilson Junior who previously played for Standard Liege.

The club are managed by former Nottingham Forest manager Sabri Lamouchi.

While he would be leaving one of the biggest leagues in Europe, it won’t necessarily harm his chances of making the Belgian team.

Manager Roberto Martinez continues to pick Thomas Vermaelen who is currently in Japan and the Spaniard continued to include Yannick Carrasco during his spell in China.

Alderweireld has played 243 games since joining Tottenham, helping them reach the final of the Champions League in 2019 when they were defeated by Liverpool in Madrid.
