Australians are travelling to spectacular waterfalls near the coast of WA to capture breathtaking photos for Instagram.

Bells Rapids, 37 kilometres northeast of Perth, is a series of streams and waterfalls that form part of the Swan River.

While the rocks often run dry with little more than a trickle for much of the year, thundering cascades are currently flowing after weeks of heavy rainfall across the region.

Perth smashed a 20-year weather record this July, copping 184.2mm of rain after 18 straight days of downpour – eclipsing the previous record of 182.6mm in 2001.

But dry weather is on the way, with a sunny spell forecast from Wednesday, August 4.

Photographers and nature lovers have been flocking to the rapids, with locals saying they have never seen them so powerful before.

A photo uploaded to the verified Facebook page, Western Australia, by travel blogger David Gold has gone viral, racking up 3,100 ‘likes’ and hundreds of responses since it was posted on Monday.

‘Just beautiful. It doesn’t happen every year but when it does breathtaking,’ one woman wrote.

‘We live in a very diverse beautiful state,’ said a second, while a third added: ‘Looks very special.’

Others saw the bright side of the wet weather that has been battering Australia’s west coast for weeks.

‘The big rains this winter are giving us all things beautiful,’ one man said.

Another added: ‘Wow, never seen it like that as usually we visit in summer.’
