Remaining two rounds of the The Daily Mail Foursomes delayed until next spring after torrential rain wipes out play on the final day at Slaley Hall

  • Organisers decided to postpone the final two rounds due to torrential rain
  • Hunting course set to host the PGA EuroPro Tour finale on October 20

The world’s largest amateur golf competition the Daily Mail Foursomes might end up also being the world’s longest golf competition.

Over 3,100 pairs set out on their quest to be crowned champions back in February 2020, with two rounds being played before coronavirus forced a 12-month suspension.

Four men’s and women’s clubs sealed their spots in the semi-finals on Monday at Slaley Hall after battling through another seven rounds this year.

But the final day’s play on Tuesday was abandoned due to torrential rain and the tournament organisers decided that the remaining two rounds would be played next spring as the Hunting course is being prepared to host the PGA EuroPro Tour finale which starts on October 20.

Tournament Director Hamish Webb said: ‘The largest golf competition will eventually be decided after three seasons of play. I’m absolutely delighted that we are going to get this competition finished. It is always a marathon and it would be hugely disappointing if we didn’t have a winner in this, the 58th year, of playing this great old tournament. This way we can.’

The men’s teams who will be returning to the Northumberland course next year will be Birch Grove, Edzell, Hellidon Lakes and Upton-by-Chester. While Lingdale, Sherborne, Weybrook Park and Whitecraigs will be out to capture the women’s title.
